Message from the Officers of Guyana Association of Texas


The Executive Body takes this opportunity to inform its members and friends of the outstanding achievements, contributions and services rendered in the past several years, by the Guyana Association of Texas.    We encourage you and your family to attend meetings of the association and contribute towards the growth and effectiveness of our organization, by participating in scheduled activities.


A brief summary of our achievements follows:


1) Scholarship Awards -

During the period (1995-2000), Fourteen (14) scholarships have been awarded to graduating High School Students.

2) Charitable Activity

·           Feeding the homeless at Thanksgiving.

·           Aid to hurricane victims in Miami, Florida.

·           Aid to Guyana Medical Relief Fund, via the Los Angeles, California Branch.

·           Aid to GDF Military Soldiers, who were injured in an Explosion at Camp Grooms in Guyana, and airlifted for emergency treatment at the Burnt Center of the   U.S. Military Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

3) Cultural and Social Activity

        ·       Participant in the Houston Caribbean Carnival.

        ·       Participant in the Houston International Festival.

        ·       Co-sponsor of a visit to Houston by Dr. Cheddi Jagan, late President of Guyana.

·           Co-sponsor of the annual Republic Day Commemoration Service.

        ·       A nnual Guyana Independence Day Celebration and Scholarship Award     Banquet.

        ·       Supporting Guyanese owned business in the Greater Houston Area.

        ·       Annual Oldies Dance .

·           A nnual New Year s Eve Dance.

In the coming months, the association plans to invite guest speakers to address the group on various topics of mutual interest and to devise other forms of activity, which will contribute to a stimulating and convivial meeting.   To achieve these goals, your attendance and participation are vital to our mutual success.

In addition to fund-raisers, the association is dependent on membership support to meet its financial obligations.   We urgently request you and your family to remit dues in person or by mail. Annual Dues are $40.00 per family and $25.00 per person. We have enclosed a self-addressed envelope to facilitate your response, and upon request, a receipt will be provided.

We sincerely thank all members and non-members who have supported us in the past and look forward to your support in the future   As a convenient reminder, we have included our 2001 calendar of events.  Your comments and recommendations for improvements are always welcome.
